What's the difference between mercerised and unmercerised cotton? 

Mercerised cotton has been chemically treated, usually in an alkaline bath. That bath makes the cotton fibres stronger and gives them the ability to take dye better. Mercerised cotton will have the shiny appearance. Unmercerised cottons have a slightly more matte finish, however I personally find unmercerised cotton to be more absorbent.
